Rice University will be open and classes will held as scheduled today 2/28/2020.
Due to a water main break, the city of Houston is on a boil water notice. Rice university has a water well that is currently supplying potable (drinkable) water to approximately half of the campus including the residential colleges and the RMC. Some buildings do not have potable water available until further notice. Toilets can flush in all buildings, and water can run in the sinks. Drinking water will be made available, as supplies permit, in the buildings with non-potable water. If you do not live in the residential colleges, you should be boiling your water until the city communicates that the water system is ok to drink.
We realize that many of the ISDs in the city are closed today which means that some faculty and staff will have child care issues. Faculty have discretion to cancel classes. Staff should communicate with their supervisor if unable to come to work.
Campus events may also continue as scheduled, providing that event coordinators manage the water supply for the event to include drinking water be made available as needed depending on the location of the event.
We will an update later today.
