As Rice reopened today, more than a week since Tropical Storm Harvey hit Houston, President Leebron sent a message to students, faculty and staff. If you missed it, you can read it on emergency.rice.edu or at this link.
We are fortunate that our back-up child care partner, Bright Horizons, has been able to assign five of their best child care workers to watch over our children who are out of school and whose parents need to work. They have set up a wonderful spot in the first-floor event space at the BRC with games, books, arts and crafts, coloring and more. They are open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. We have some slots for our Rice employees for the rest of this week that are available on a first-come, first-served basis. To make a reservation, please e-mail Sue Prochazka at sprochazka@rice.edu. She will send you a registration form and a confirmation.
If you or someone you know would benefit from a student volunteer crew to help with recovery from Harvey, send an email request to helphouston@rice.edu.
The Glasscock School of Continuing Studies is working with several Rice experts on a series of events for the Rice and Houston communities on some important aspects of post-Harvey recovery. Topics haven't been finalized yet, but the organizers hope to offer presentations with the experts in person on the very practical matters people are facing, such as cleaning up after a flood and filling out FEMA forms. The presentations will be live-streamed and archived. Be on the lookout for more information in the days ahead.
Fondren Library's Woodson Research Center has compiled guidelines for recovering documents, photos, books and other materials that were subjected to rain and floodwater. Look for helpful tips here.
The latest bulletin from the Federal Emergency Management Agency includes updates about FEMA's response to Harvey. You can read it here.
Now that the university is open again, we will send Harvey updates only as needed rather than on a daily basis. You can still send comments or questions to cmtcomment@rice.edu.
It was so good to see so many of you on campus today. The Rice community is stronger than ever.
