Dean of Undergraduates John Hutchinson sent this message to parents and families of students Sunday morning.
Dear Rice Parents and Families:
As you no doubt know, the weather became significantly worse in Houston last night with very heavy rains. You are seeing images of houses under water and people stranded, and I share your heartfelt worries about the people of this wonderful city.
I am writing to reassure you that the campus is safe. We had some trees go down, we have had flooded road closures on campus from time to time. At this time, there is minimal standing water on campus, mostly in grassy areas designed to retain water. We have had some water in basements in some buildings. My report this morning is that the colleges are all fine. We had a minor leak on the second floor of Lovett and in Lovett Commons, but I believe it has been addressed. The neighborhood around Rice has flooded roadways.
We will continue to be under threat of heavy rain, flooding, and even tornadoes. This storm will continue to threaten Houston for 2 to 3 more days. The Crisis Management Team is in session constantly to provide immediate information to our students. Classes have been cancelled for Monday, and we will make decisions about later dates as the situation evolves.
Our city is struggling, and we are all deeply concerned about our friends, families, neighbors and fellow Houstonians. But the Rice campus is in good shape, and our students on campus are safe and well. Our college magisters are making contact this morning with their students who chose to remain off campus.
Our campus is like a small community, with police, food services, power and water. I’ll try to keep you posted as frequently as I can.
Future updates will be posted to my Dean Hutch Facebook page. Email is slower and less reliable. Please follow that page.
