Harvey update for Sunday evening

Harvey update for Sunday evening

The most recent weather reports indicate that Houston has received as much as 24 inches of rain so far, and potentially more in isolated areas of our community. Substantial additional rain is forecast for this evening -- anywhere from 5 to 10 inches, depending on the different weather models. Current models also indicate that the heavy rain threat will remain through midday Thursday. We will know much more by tomorrow morning regarding how the rest of the week is likely to play out weather-wise.

Given the additional storms that we expect tonight and flood conditions on many roads, we strongly recommend that you remain in your current location and avoid the risk of traveling and getting caught in an unsafe situation. For those of you on campus, we ask you to remain indoors as much as possible.

A few status updates:

  • Rice will remain closed through 11:59 p.m. Tuesday.
  • The Rec Center will be open Monday from noon to 6 p.m. for Rice students, staff and faculty only. A Rice ID is required for entry.
  • Fondren Library will be open Monday from noon to 6 p.m. for Rice students, staff and faculty only. A Rice ID is required for entry.
  • All four serveries (North, South, West and Seibel) will be open Monday and Tuesday for brunch from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and for dinner from 5 to7 p.m.
  • A crew from Facilities Engineering and Planning remains on campus for the duration so any issues can be addressed.
  • A current list of buildings on campus that have experienced weather-related issues is being managed by FE&P.

The Crisis Management Team continues to meet regularly. As always, your safety is our first priority. You can expect another update from us in the morning. Stay dry!

As usual, if you have comments or questions, send an email to cmtcomment@rice.edu.
